Commercial Gravel Installation for Properties That Demand Consistency

Gravel is a practical, durable ground-cover solution for commercial properties, but only when it’s installed correctly. Poor preparation leads to rutting, drainage problems, gravel displacement, and repeat maintenance calls. That compounds quickly when you’re managing multiple locations.

Case approaches gravel installation as a facility management decision, not a landscaping job. We evaluate the site conditions, assess drainage requirements, prepare the base, select the right material for the application, and install it to commercial-grade standards, so the result holds up under foot traffic, vehicle access, weather cycles, and ongoing property use.

Founded in 2009, Case currently services 35,000+ locations across North America through a 25,000+ service partner network, 500+ trucks and pieces of equipment, and proprietary technology that gives clients real-time visibility into service delivery across every site. We are the third largest snow and ice company in North America and the first in our industry to achieve SN 9001 certification.

For gravel installation, that operational depth means one point of contact, standardized delivery across every property in your portfolio, and documented completion, not a handshake and a hope.

What Commercial Gravel Installation Includes

Site Assessment and Planning

Our gravel installation service covers the complete project scope, from initial assessment through final cleanup.

We inspect the area, assess soil and drainage conditions, identify any existing grading concerns, and determine the appropriate installation approach for the application.

Site Preparation

We clear the existing surface, remove debris, and address any underlying issues, compaction, erosion, or drainage, before any material goes down.

Material Selection

Material is distributed evenly across the prepared area, graded to finished depth, and leveled or compacted where appropriate for the surface type and intended use.

Grading and Drainage Considerations

We help you select the right gravel type and grade for the application, decorative ground cover, pedestrian pathways, access areas, drainage-focused applications, or erosion-control zones. Different commercial applications have different material requirements.

Gravel Installation

Case manages landscape programs across all seasons, including spring and fall transitions, summer maintenance, and winter preparation.

Final Inspection and Site Cleanup

We inspect the completed area, remove all debris and overspray from surrounding surfaces, and document completion. You get a clean site and a clear record.

Commercial Applications for Gravel Installation

Gravel serves functional and aesthetic purposes across a wide range of commercial property types. We install gravel for:

Landscape Beds and Ground Cover

Replace high-maintenance turf or bare soil with gravel ground cover in planting beds, around trees and shrubs, and along building perimeters. Gravel reduces weed pressure, retains moisture in planted areas, and eliminates the mowing and irrigation requirements associated with turf.

Pedestrian Walkways
and Pathways

Defined gravel pathways guide foot traffic across commercial campuses, office parks, hospitality properties, and community spaces. When properly prepared and compacted, gravel walkways hold their shape under regular pedestrian use.

Drainage and
Erosion Control

Behind buildings, around HVAC equipment, along loading docks, and in equipment staging areas, gravel provides a clean, low-maintenance surface that handles moderate vehicle and foot traffic without becoming a mud issue.

Commercial Driveways
and Access Areas

Gravel’s permeability makes it suitable for drainage swales, erosion-control areas along slopes and embankments, and French drain outflows. We install gravel in these applications as part of a site-condition-driven solution, not as a cosmetic fix.

Parking Area
Surfaces

Gravel provides a cost-effective, functional surface for service access areas, secondary driveways, equipment staging zones, and utility corridors on commercial properties, particularly where asphalt or concrete may be cost-prohibitive or unnecessary.

Loading, Equipment, and
Utility Areas

Gravel installations at commercial property entrances, building frontages, and landscape feature areas reinforce a professional appearance while reducing ongoing maintenance requirements relative to planted alternatives.

Decorative Entrance and Feature Areas

For overflow parking, employee parking, or low-traffic secondary lots, gravel provides a functional surface that can be installed and maintained at lower cost than paved alternatives. We assess whether compaction and base depth requirements are appropriate for the intended traffic load.

Why Commercial Property Teams Choose Gravel

Lower Ongoing Maintenance

Gravel does not need mowing, seasonal reseeding, fertilization, or the same irrigation schedule as turf. For commercial properties managing tight maintenance budgets across multiple sites, this is a meaningful operational difference.

Drainage Performance

Permeable gravel surfaces allow water to pass through rather than pool. In areas where drainage is a recurring issue, gravel can reduce standing water, runoff risk, and the erosion that follows.

Durability Under Commercial Conditions

A properly prepared gravel installation handles heavy foot traffic, vehicle access, and weather cycles without the surface failure that occurs when material is placed directly on unprepared ground. The difference between a durable gravel installation and a maintenance problem is almost always in the base preparation.

Reduced Irrigation Requirements

Gravel ground cover in planting beds retains soil moisture and reduces the irrigation burden in those zones, a practical consideration for properties managing irrigation costs across large or multiple sites.

Defined, Professional Appearance

Gravel defines property edges, beds, and pathways clearly. It improves curb appeal for commercial properties where tenant satisfaction and customer perception are operational priorities.

Long-Term Cost Efficiency

Installed correctly, commercial gravel requires far less intervention than turf alternatives. For portfolio managers calculating total cost of maintenance across dozens or hundreds of locations, the lifecycle cost difference is significant.

Our Gravel Installation Process

Every Case gravel installation follows the same process regardless of property size or portfolio scope.

01

Site Assessment

We visit the property and assess the area for existing drainage conditions, soil stability, surface grades, access constraints, and proximity to building infrastructure. We document what we find and propose a solution aligned with the property’s functional and aesthetic requirements.

02

Project
Planning

We confirm material type, installation depth, grading approach, and project schedule with your facilities or property management contact. For multi-site portfolios, we coordinate installation sequences across locations with one point of contact on our end.

03

Gravel
Installation

For access areas, driveways, and high-traffic surfaces, we install and compact a compactable base material before placing finish gravel. This is the step most contractors skip, and where most gravel installations fail.

04

Site Preparation

We place and distribute the selected gravel to the specified depth, grade the surface evenly, and compact or rake to the finished profile depending on the application type.

05

Grading

We clear the installation area, remove existing material or vegetation as required, and address any sub-surface conditions, compaction, soft spots, or drainage, before any gravel goes down.

06

Base Preparation
(Where Applicable)

We inspect the completed area against the planned scope, clear the surrounding surfaces of any displaced material, photograph the finished installation, and confirm completion with your designated contact.

07

Final Inspection and Documentation

We grade the prepared surface to finished elevations that direct water movement appropriately for the application, away from building foundations, toward drainage structures, or across landscaped slopes.

Commercial Properties We Serve

Case services commercial properties across the United States, with a service partner network covering over 35,000 locations. We provide gravel installation as part of commercial landscaping programs for:

If your organization manages commercial exterior maintenance across multiple sites, we have the service infrastructure, partner network, and operational systems to support it at scale.

Multi-Site Gravel Installation Programs

Single-location gravel projects are straightforward. Multi-site programs are where most commercial landscaping contractors fall short. Case was built for portfolio-scale service delivery. Our clients don’t manage one property, they manage regional or national portfolios of 40, 100, or 500+ locations where maintenance consistency, scheduling reliability, and centralized reporting are non-negotiable. For multi-site gravel installation programs, we provide:

Standardized Specifications Across Every Location

We document material type, installation depth, grading approach, and quality standards at the outset, then apply them consistently regardless of which market or service partner handles the physical installation.

Centralized Project Coordination

One account contact manages communication, scheduling, and completion tracking across your entire portfolio. You are not calling individual contractors in 12 different markets.

Proprietary Client Technology

Our clients access real-time service status through our in-house platform, the same system that manages service delivery across 35,000+ locations. You can see what's been completed, what's in progress, and what's scheduled next, across every property in your portfolio.

Vendor Consolidation

If you're currently managing separate gravel, landscaping, snow, and irrigation contractors across your portfolio, Case can consolidate those services under a single master service agreement. Fewer vendors, standardized performance expectations, and one monthly service review.

SLA-Driven Delivery

We operate under defined service level agreements. Completion timelines, communication standards, and quality benchmarks are agreed upfront and tracked throughout.

Why Case for Commercial Gravel Installation

Founded 2009, Built Specifically for Commercial Portfolios

There is no shortage of landscaping contractors who will install gravel. What is harder to find is a commercial facility maintenance company with the operational infrastructure to manage gravel installation, and the full scope of exterior property services, consistently across a large portfolio.

Case was established to serve multi-site commercial clients, not residential customers who happen to own a business property. Our systems, staffing, and service delivery model are designed around commercial requirements from the ground up.

35,000+ Locations Currently Serviced

We have the service network to support national and regional portfolios across multiple states and markets. We are not scaling up for your project, we are already operating at that scale.

500+ Trucks and Equipment

Scale matters in commercial facility maintenance. Our recognition as a top-three operator in snow and ice is a reflection of the systems, capacity, and reliability that enterprise clients require, and that same infrastructure supports our landscaping services year-round.

25,000+ Service Partner Network

We have the physical capacity to support large commercial projects and multi-site rollout programs without subcontracting work to whoever is available.

Third Largest Snow and Ice Company in North America

Case manages landscape programs across all seasons, including spring and fall transitions, summer maintenance, and winter preparation.

Proprietary Technology, In-House

We built our client-facing technology internally to match how commercial portfolios are actually managed. The result is a platform that gives facility directors and property managers real-time visibility into every service event, at every location.

Is Gravel the Right Solution for Your Commercial Property?

Gravel is a good fit for specific site conditions and applications. It is not the right answer for every surface problem, and a contractor who tells you otherwise is prioritizing a sale over a durable result. Here is an honest assessment of where gravel performs well, and where it does not.

Gravel Works Well For:

Planting beds, building perimeters, tree rings, and shrub borders. Gravel suppresses weeds, retains soil moisture, and eliminates the mowing and irrigation requirements of turf in those zones. This is one of the strongest commercial applications because the performance difference over time is significant and measurable.

Gravel compacted over a stable base performs adequately for low-to-moderate pedestrian traffic on secondary walkways, service paths, garden walks, routes between buildings on low-density campuses. Traffic volume and foot type matter: gravel holds up well under normal pedestrian use but shifts under heavy, concentrated foot traffic over time.

Permeable gravel allows water to pass through and slow runoff velocity in drainage channels and along eroding slopes. For these applications, the gravel spec matters, angular, open-graded material performs differently than rounded decorative stone. We assess what the site condition actually requires before selecting material.

Service driveways, utility corridors, equipment staging areas, and secondary access routes where traffic is occasional and speed is low. The base preparation requirements increase significantly as vehicle weight and frequency increase, this is where the installation either holds or fails.

Where traffic is lower volume, speed is minimal, and paved alternatives are cost-prohibitive, gravel with proper base compaction can provide a functional surface. It requires periodic replenishment and regrading, which should be factored into the maintenance planning.

Decorative gravel at building entrances, around signage, and in feature landscape areas improves appearance and reduces maintenance relative to planted alternatives. This is a cosmetic application, material selection focuses on appearance and size rather than structural performance.

Gravel is generally not the right solution for:

Primary vehicle routes and main site driveways

A commercial property’s primary driveway or main entrance road handles too much traffic load, too frequently, for gravel to maintain a consistent surface. Rutting, displacement, and ongoing replenishment costs will make paved alternatives the better long-term investment. If the main access route needs resurfacing, asphalt or concrete is the appropriate recommendation, not gravel.

ADA-compliant pedestrian routes

The ADA Standards for Accessible Design require firm, stable, slip-resistant surfaces on accessible routes. Loose gravel does not meet those requirements on accessible pathways connecting parking areas, building entrances, or accessible facility features. Any pedestrian route with ADA compliance requirements needs a stable, paved or compacted-surface solution, gravel is not appropriate there regardless of how it looks.

Primary parking areas with regular high-volume use

Parking lots handling daily, high-volume traffic from customers, tenants, or employees develop ruts, soft spots, and surface irregularities quickly without a paved surface. Gravel parking is appropriate for secondary or overflow use, not as the primary lot surface on a busy commercial property.

Heavy truck routes, loading dock approaches, and delivery areas

Semi-trucks, delivery vehicles, and equipment at loading docks concentrate enormous load on a small contact area. Gravel under repeated heavy-vehicle traffic will displace, rut, and require frequent regrading. Concrete or reinforced asphalt is the correct surface for these applications.

Drainage problems that require engineered solutions

If a property has a genuine drainage problem, chronic flooding, structural water intrusion, inadequate storm sewer capacity, or a failing drainage system, gravel placed over the problem area is not a fix. It may slow visible symptoms temporarily while the underlying issue continues. Drainage problems that exceed surface-level remediation require evaluation by a civil or drainage engineer, not a landscaping contractor. We will tell you that directly during the site assessment rather than install gravel over a problem it cannot solve.

Areas with unstable or highly compressible subgrade

Gravel requires a stable sub-base to hold its position and grade under load. If the underlying soil is highly expansive, saturated, or composed of organic fill, gravel placed on top will shift, settle unevenly, and create a surface that is worse than what it replaced. Sub-base stabilization or soil remediation may need to precede any surface installation, gravel or otherwise.

The site assessment we conduct before every project exists to answer this question honestly. If gravel is not the right solution for your application, we will say so and explain what is. If it is appropriate, we will scope it properly from the ground up.

Yes. Multi-site portfolio programs are our primary operating model. We provide centralized coordination, standardized specifications, and completion documentation across portfolios of any size.

Material selection depends on the application, decorative ground cover, pedestrian walkways, drainage applications, access areas, and high-traffic surfaces each have appropriate material specifications. We determine the right type and grade during the site assessment phase.

We handle the full installation scope, site clearing, preparation, grading, base work where required, gravel placement, and final cleanup. Gravel placed on unprepared ground fails quickly in commercial conditions, so proper preparation is standard on every project.

Project duration depends on area size, site conditions, access constraints, and whether base work is required. We confirm realistic timelines during the assessment phase and schedule around your property’s operational requirements.
